LOWER KINABATANGAN RIVER

Sabah’s longest river, Kinabatangan flowing 560 km from the mountainous interior to the Sulu Sea is also it’s most important. The Lower Kinabatangan is said to have the greatest concentration of wildlife in all of Southeast Asia and certainly offers the most accessible wildlife viewing for the visitor. Variety of accommodation, from basic to comfortable lodges with boat cruise along the river, its tributaries and hidden ox – bow lakes revealing the wonders of the floodplain. This is the place to see wildlife in its most natural settings. One of the most famous creatures of the Lower Kinbatangan is the strange Proboscis Monkey, found only in Borneo. Other primates include macaques, leaf monkeys, gibbons and endangered Orang Utan. All eight species of Borneo’s hornbills are found here, with rare species such as the endemic Bornean Bristlehead, the endangered Strom’s Stork, many eagles, Kingfishers and dozens of gloriously coloured species making it a birder’s paradise. The world’s smallest elephant, the Bornean pygmy elephant, migrates up and down the Kinabatangan in search of food, and in season can be seen feeding on the riverbanks. Crocodiles, Monitor Lizards, Wild Pigs and otters are also frequently spotted, while the buss of insects and croaking of frogs is a reminder that even more wildlife awaits in the rich forests along the Kinabatangan River.
